Rio De Janeiro, or simply called Rio has a population of about 6 million people, making it the second largest city, behind Sao Paulo, of Brazil, which is located in the region of South America (Left Picture). Rio lies on the Atlantic coast, near the Tropic of Capricorn, where the shoreline points from east to west. When the Portuguese settlement arrived at Guanabara Bay in January, they thought it was the entrance of a large river, therefore naming the western portion of Guanabara Bay, Rio De Janeiro meaning 'River of January'.
Rio is divided into three portions, the Centro (Centre), Zona Norte (North Zone) and Zona Sul (South Zone). The Centre lies on the plains of the western boarder. The North Zone, also the greater portion, extends to the northwest meadows of continental sediments. The South Zone reaches the shores and out to the open sea, it is separated from the Centre and the North Zone by forested mountains.
